The Arrival of Cinema in Mexico
The Invention and Initial Reception
- The Lumière brothers patented the cinematograph on February 13, 1895, initially viewing it as a fleeting invention but eager to capitalize on its potential.
- President Porfirio Díaz, aiming to elevate Mexico's status akin to France, received the Lumière invention on August 6, 1896, expressing surprise and fascination during its demonstration.
Public Presentation and Popularity
- On August 14, 1896, the cinematograph was publicly showcased at a drugstore located at number 9 Plateros Street (now Madero), attracting a large audience eager to witness moving images lasting between 40 to 60 seconds.
- Shortly after the public showing, an exclusive gala function was organized for elite attendees who preferred not to mingle with lower-class citizens. This marked Mexico as the first country in the continent to enjoy cinema.
