3D Scanners: Which One Should You Buy?

Overview of 3D Scanners

  • The video discusses various types of 3D scanners available at vision.com, addressing common questions about which scanner is suitable for specific projects such as reverse engineering, scanning people, or requiring high accuracy.

Ein Scan Series

Ein Scan (Hobbyist Scanner)

  • The Ein Scan is an inexpensive, handheld hobbyist-grade scanner that offers full-color infrared scanning capabilities. It performs well for basic object scanning but is limited compared to professional options.

Ein Scan SP (Professional Applications)

  • The Ein Scan SP can be used for professional applications with fixed turntable scans. It provides high-resolution scans (40-50 Micron) but struggles with dark and reflective objects.

Pro HD Scanner

  • The Pro HD has improved projectors for brighter structured light scanning. It's versatile for turntable scans and allows handheld use, though it still faces challenges with certain surfaces.

Ein Scan H2 (Best Color Scanner)

  • The H2 is a recent upgrade known for its excellent color capture and detail in large objects. It's particularly effective for AR/VR applications and miniaturizing people due to its large field of view.

Ein Scan HX (Advanced Features)

  • The HX features blue lasers enhancing performance on dark and shiny surfaces while achieving 40 Micron accuracy. It’s ideal for reverse engineering and includes both laser and structured light modes.

Free Scan Series

Free Scan Combo

  • This model is praised as a reliable workhorse in the field, known for durability and positive customer feedback. It serves as a baseline option for high-end professional scanning needs.

Metrology Grade Accuracy

  • For users needing metrology-grade accuracy—especially in machine shops—the scanners facilitate inspection workflows that save time and money by ensuring precise measurements.

Accessories & Portability

Free Scan Combo Overview

Features and Benefits of the Free Scan Combo

  • The Free Scan Combo is compact, made of metal, and features multiple laser modes including 26 lines, 7 lines, and single line. It also includes infrared capabilities.
  • While not primarily designed for scanning people, its speed makes it suitable for applications where full color isn't necessary. It boasts metrology-grade accuracy with a precision of 20 microns (0.02 mm).
  • Capable of achieving a resolution down to 0.01 mm, it can capture intricate details such as individual strands in carbon fiber materials.
  • Each scanner comes with approximately 3,000 to 5,000 markers included at no extra cost; replacements are needed only after extensive use over time.
  • The Free Scan Frio variant offers enhanced capabilities with up to 98 laser lines and allows for accurate scans without needing numerous markers.

Advanced Scanning Capabilities

Enhanced Features of the Free Scan Frio

  • The Free Scan Frio supports photogrammetry mode using magnetic scale bars that help maintain volumetric accuracy over larger areas during scans.
  • This model enables scanning large objects like cars or airplanes in one go without losing detail or accuracy across distances exceeding six feet.
  • Although more expensive than the combo version, its value is justified for users needing to scan large parts efficiently.

Accessories and Support Offered

Essential Accessories Included

  • A can of disappearing scanning spray is provided with each scanner; options vary in duration from two to four hours or up to thirty-six hours before fading away.
  • Transparent dulling spray helps improve scan quality on shiny surfaces by reducing reflectivity while capturing color accurately.

Additional Tools Provided

  • Scanning pyramids are included as an alternative to placing multiple markers directly on objects; they enhance tracking efficiency for lasers.

Customer Support and Training

Commitment to Customer Assistance

SHOP Scanners on our site: http://www.visionminer.com/scanners There's a lot of 3D scanners out there, and a ton of different prices -- from $1000-$35,000, Shining3D has one of the best lineups we've ever seen -- that's why we carry them here at Vision Miner. We don't just sell scanners -- we consult, we demo, we MAKE SURE you're getting the right piece of equipment before you buy -- that's the way we work. That being said, give us a call -- almost anyone who answers the phone will be able to help you out :) Einstar: A great scanner for the price -- better than anything else in it's segment, there's not much that holds a light to the ease of use + quality on the Einstar. That being said, it's not quite a professional scanner -- great for hobby projects, but keep reading for the pro scanners. Einscan SP: The most basic automated turntable fixed scanner. Tons of small objects? Simple objects? Educational classroom? This is the one for you. Still putting out professional-quality data and details, this is a great start for turntable 3D scanning. Einscan Pro HD: the big brother to the SP, the Pro HD is a much more dynamic turntable scanner. Brighter projectors, faster processing, all this means faster and better scanning, even on a lot of dark-colored parts, which would normally just absorb the light. It also adds handheld capabilities -- if 90% of your work is turntable, but you want to occasionally scan something by hand -- this could be the one for you. Einscan H2: The H2 is the best for Color, and for people, or organic objects. It's programmed to deal with the slightly movement of faces, limbs, etc, during scanning -- try scanning a face with the HX, and you might get 3 versions of the cheek, and two of the chin, just because the model moved slightly. Not so with the H2 -- scanning people, in full color, has never been easier -- seriously, check out this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXeJ18RXeLw Einscan HX: Lasers. Blue light. Handheld. Shiny objects? Lasers will get that. Dark, glossy objects? Lasers will get that. The HX is the entry-level laser scanner, for objects that you can't spray, coat, or modify -- and it's also more accurate than the structured-light scanners. Large or small objects, the HX does a great job, with lasers and markers, or just with blue structured light. It's a beast. Freescan Combo: The Freescan combo took everything great about the HX and H2, and smashed them into a smaller, more compact metal body. The small size lets you get in nooks and crannies where other scanners don't stand a chance -- in addition to 3x laser modes, and the infrared scanning of the H2 (without color), the Freescan Combo literally blew us away with it's speed, ease of use, and ACCURACY -- 0.02mm accuracy. That's metrology grade, inspection-level data -- reverse engineer it, make it, then INSPECT it. The Freescan combo is Rob's current favorite of the lineup. Freescan Trio: Need lasers, but can't use markers? The Freescan Trio tracks with 98 laser lines -- without markers. It's the only one in it's class with that ability. It also has photogrammetry modes for HUGE object -- airplanes, boats, cars, in a single shot -- if you're scanning BIG objects, and/or don't want to use laser markers, but need lasers -- the Trio is the one for you.
