Description and Historical Context
- The Dome of Yusuf is located south of the Rock Dome, at the heart of Al-Aqsa Mosque, positioned between the Minbar Burhan al-Din and the dome known as "al-Nahwiya."
- Constructed by Ottoman governor Yusuf Agha in 1681 CE (1992 AH), this dome features a square structure with open sides, except for the southern side which rests against the southern wall of the Rock Dome courtyard.
Architectural Features
- Inside this closed wall, there is an inscription above a mihrab (prayer niche), along with a small prayer area topped by a dome supported by four shallow columns.
- The dome is adorned with a crescent symbol typical of Ottoman architecture, highlighting its cultural significance and artistic style.
Current Challenges
- The site has faced threats from occupying forces that target various parts of Al-Aqsa Mosque, indicating ongoing tensions surrounding this historic location.
