Container Types for Global Shipping

Overview of Container Types

  • Millions of products require shipping worldwide, each with unique shapes, sizes, and requirements. The right container is essential for effective cargo transport.
  • Standard containers are the most common, available in 20-foot or 40-foot lengths. They are made from steel or aluminum and are air-tight and water-resistant. Variants include high cubes (more vertical space) and half-height containers.

Specialized Container Types

  • Reefer containers function as large refrigerators, maintaining temperatures between -30 to 30 degrees Celsius. They require power and regular maintenance, making them more expensive.
  • Double door containers feature doors at both ends for easier loading/unloading; goods can be accessed from either end without reversing.
  • Open-top containers lack a roof, suitable for oversized cargo like heavy machinery. Cargo can be secured with lashing rings but cannot be stacked if it exceeds roof height.

Additional Container Variants

  • Pallet wide containers accommodate wooden Euro pallets, being five centimeters wider than standard ones. They hold up to 15 euro pallets compared to the average of 11.
  • Flat rack containers have sides only on short ends, ideal for heavy or bulky loads that exceed closed container dimensions but cannot be stacked.
  • Side door containers offer extra access through long side doors, facilitating loading/unloading by multiple workers simultaneously.

Unique Features of Certain Containers

  • Hard top containers come with a detachable hard top for easier loading of difficult items through side doors.
  • Tank containers are designed specifically for transporting liquids using strong steel and anti-corrosive materials to prevent leaks.
  • Insulated containers maintain consistent internal temperatures regardless of external conditions due to sealed interiors that avoid condensation.
