#PrimerosAuxilios ¿Cómo saber si es seguro ayudar?
Introduction to Basic First Aid
Initial Protocol and Scene Safety
- The course begins with an overview of the initial protocol in first aid, emphasizing the importance of recognizing a safe scene before providing assistance.
- Personal safety is paramount; one must activate emergency medical services and perform a primary assessment while ensuring the scene is safe.
- Observational skills are crucial; potential risks include vehicular traffic, fire, weapons, explosives, toxic materials, and environmental hazards. If any threats are identified, maintain distance and call for help.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) to safeguard against bodily fluids during first aid procedures. This includes protection for eyes, nose, and mouth from splashes or liquids like blood.
Emergency Call Procedures
- After assessing the scene's safety and using PPE, ask critical questions: What happened? What is the situation? How many people are injured? What injuries are present?
- In Mexico, the emergency number is 911. When calling this number, provide essential contact information to assist in delivering initial support effectively.
Primary Assessment Steps
- A radio operator will guide you through key questions to identify the type of emergency when you call for help. Share your observations from the scene evaluation.
- Assess if the person needing help is alert; obtaining consent for first aid is vital before proceeding with assistance.
- The primary assessment involves checking responsiveness through three stimuli:
- A: Alert - conscious individuals who follow movements with their eyes.
- B: Verbal - those who respond verbally or make sounds when spoken to.
- C: Unconscious - individuals who do not respond to any stimuli.
