Importance of the West Philippines Sea
- The Philippines is a tropical archipelago rich in natural resources, with the West Philippines Sea being crucial for the livelihood of many Filipinos, especially fishermen from various provinces.
- The West Philippines Sea is officially designated by the Philippines as part of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), encompassing waters from Batanes down to Palawan.
Economic Contributions
- According to data from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BAR), over 275,520 metric tons of fish were caught in 2023 from regions contributing to the West Philippines Sea.
- The area is also abundant in methane hydrates and has significant reserves of oil and natural gas, with potential production estimated at over 57.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 6.1 billion barrels of oil.
Challenges Facing the West Philippines Sea
Environmental Concerns
- Overfishing, illegal fishing practices, and poor resource management are leading to declining fish populations and damaging coral reefs that serve as habitats for marine life.
- Additional threats include severe weather conditions and pollution affecting marine ecosystems.
Territorial Disputes
