During the Gilded Age, the rapid expansion of industry meant a new hierarchy for large corporations. Between the owners and the laborers, and new class of middle management workers, known as white collar workers, kept everything organized and running. Along with them came a flurry of new administrative and supportive roles, some of which offered women an expanded role in the workplace. The expansion of middle management (along with other factors) led to the rise of the middle class in America. And these folks had enough discretionary income to insert themselves into a leisure culture, a desire met by theme parks like Coney Island and P.T. Barnum's traveling circus. But the elite also played a role in the rise of the middle class. Wealthy men and women like Andrew Carnegie and Phoebe Apperson Hearst complied with the dictates of the Gospel of Wealth and provided society with institutions by which the poor could better themselves and, perhaps, rise into the middle class.
