Types of Professional Competencies
- Professional competencies can be categorized into two main types: technical competencies and behavioral competencies. Both are essential for success in the workplace.
- Technical competencies refer to specific, concrete skills required to perform a particular job. Examples include cooking for chefs and coding for computer programmers.
- Behavioral competencies encompass interpersonal skills applicable in the workplace, such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability. These skills are often more subjective than technical ones.
Development and Evaluation of Competencies
- Technical competencies are typically learned through formal education, training, or work experience. They are easier to demonstrate through qualifications like degrees or certifications.
- In contrast, behavioral competencies are harder to assess since they cannot be easily identified on resumes or cover letters. Employers often need to wait until interviews or initial weeks of employment to evaluate these skills effectively.
