Establishment of RAF Hospital

• The RAF aimed to increase hospital facilities in Britain post-war due to the return of servicemen with severe injuries. A new hospital was built at Knox and Hall, Lincolnshire.

• Although completed in 1940, the hospital did not open until November 1947 because it was initially deemed too small for its intended purpose.

Operations and Closure

• The hospital primarily served military personnel stationed around Lincolnshire, as well as their families and local civilians until its closure in 1983.

• After closing, the facility was leased to the US government during the Gulf War but treated only 35 casualties before being returned to the RAF in 1994.

Current Status and Tours

• Since 1995, the complex has been abandoned but is privately owned. Tours are available for a fee, with proceeds used for building preservation.
