Understanding Interculturality

What is Culture?

  • The UNESCO defines culture as a collection of distinctive traits—spiritual, material, intellectual, and emotional—that characterize a society or social group. It encompasses arts, lifestyle, human rights, values systems, traditions, and beliefs.

Pluriculturality Explained

  • Pluriculturality refers to the simultaneous presence of multiple cultures within a single territory that may interact with one another. It emphasizes cultural pluralism as essential in democratic societies to recognize diverse cultures equally.

Defining Multiculturality

  • Multiculturality is merely descriptive; it highlights the variety of cultures in a specific area without addressing their interrelations. Unlike pluriculturality, it does not imply interaction among these cultures but rather coexistence within the same geographical space.

The Concept of Interculturality

  • Interculturality aims to eliminate hierarchies among cultures by transforming internal relationships through interaction. It seeks to establish equality among different cultures without any being superior or inferior to others. This transformation relies on intercultural dialogue and mutual recognition.

Levels of Intercultural Process

Knowledge

  • Involves self-awareness and overcoming personal biases such as racism and prejudice while fostering individual and cultural identity through understanding others' identities and practices.

Respect

  • Emphasizes treating individuals with dignity and recognizing them as subjects worthy of respectful listening and free expression of their ideas and beliefs. It acknowledges the existence of diverse perspectives on reality.

Horizontal Dialogue

  • Focuses on equal opportunities for interaction where no single truth prevails; promotes empowerment leading to mutually beneficial relationships (win-win).

Mutual Understanding

  • Achieved when there is comprehension between parties leading to mutual enrichment, resonance, empathy, and willingness to incorporate each other's viewpoints into one's own understanding.
