Restoration of the Orangery Sculptures

Overview of Restoration Challenges

  • The grates and sculptures at the entrance to the Parterre of the Orangery were in poor condition, necessitating restoration efforts.
  • The sculptures, weighing around 27 tonnes each, posed a significant challenge for removal due to uncertainty about their internal structure.

Methods of Sculpture Removal

  • For initial sculptures (Vertumnus and Pomona; Aurora and Cephalus), a sectional removal method was employed, allowing for careful disassembly.
  • Each sculpture was taken down in approximately 40 pieces, averaging 500 kg per piece; some fragments weighed just a few pounds while others exceeded one tonne.

Insights from the Restoration Process

  • The process revealed that it was possible to remove larger sculptures intact without risking damage, leading to a change in strategy for subsequent works.

Advanced Techniques Used

  • For Venus and Adonis; Zephyr and Flora, a wire saw technique was used to cut through the plinth before placing them into metal cages for crane lifting.
  • The removal took place at night to minimize disruption, highlighting the complexity and care involved in working closely with these historical artworks.

Future Plans for Restoration

  • The transported sculptures will be restored at Mantes-la-Jolie in collaboration with local government authorities, ensuring proper facilities are available for this extensive project.
