Initial Care of Hemorrhages
Understanding Hemorrhage
- Hemorrhage is defined as the loss of blood from blood vessels to nearby or external tissues. It can be categorized as either internal (hidden) or external (obvious), with both types posing significant risks if not managed promptly.
- Immediate treatment for hemorrhage involves evaluating the scene and ensuring personal protective equipment is worn. Activation of emergency medical services is crucial if the injured person is unresponsive, bleeding profusely, or difficult to control.
Steps for Initial Treatment
Containing Active Bleeding
- Upon identifying active bleeding, it’s essential to contain it by applying direct pressure and using a compression bandage.
Applying Direct Pressure
- To apply direct pressure effectively:
- Remove any clothing covering the wound carefully, ensuring it isn’t stuck to the skin.
- Use a clean dressing or cloth to apply direct pressure on the wound.
- Press down firmly with your palm on the dressing.
- Add more gauze or dressings on top and secure everything with a bandage.
Using a Compression Bandage
- When placing a compression bandage:
- Ensure that the dressing or gauze over the bleeding area is positioned below where you start wrapping.
- Make two turns while applying pressure, monitoring for signs that bleeding has subsided.
