Introduction to SAP Profiles
Overview of SAP Profiles
- SAP operates within a complex environment of applications and transactions structured in modules, featuring three main types of profiles: functional consultants, technical consultants, and end users.
Functional Consultants
- Functional consultants possess technical knowledge about ERP processes and specialize in one or more SAP modules. They adapt the system to meet specific business needs through configuration tasks known as customization.
- Their role is crucial as they do not implement products directly but work with SAP partners (consultancies) for implementation based on organizational processes.
- There are two types of functional consultants:
- Project Consultants: Responsible for evaluation, preparation, implementation, and testing to ensure proper functionality according to company requirements.
- Maintenance Consultants: Provide support for issues arising post-implementation.
Technical Consultants
- Technical consultants are IT professionals divided into two categories:
- Basic Administrators/Consultants: Manage and maintain the SAP system by installing software on servers and managing database access and permissions.
- Developers/Programmers: Use the ABAP programming language to create custom solutions when standard configurations do not meet business requirements by modifying or adding functionalities.
End Users
- End users are employees who utilize the implemented SAP system for their daily tasks; their roles determine access levels within the application. For instance, managers have roles that allow them to execute transactions not available to billing staff.
Implementation Process
- The implementation process begins with a basic consultant installing SAP NetWeaver on servers followed by necessary module installations tailored to the business model. Subsequently, functional consultants configure these modules while developers customize code as per client specifications since SAP is an open-source system allowing extensive modifications. Finally, user training is essential for effective utilization of all functionalities offered by SAP.
