The Process of Photosynthesis
- Plants absorb water and minerals from the soil through their roots, creating a mixture known as "raw sap," which travels from the roots to the stem.
- The raw sap moves through woody tubes called xylem until it reaches the leaves, where photosynthesis occurs.
- In the leaves, chloroplasts containing chlorophyll capture sunlight. This light energy combines with raw sap and carbon dioxide to produce "refined sap" while releasing oxygen.
Key Characteristics of Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis only takes place during daylight when plants can access sunlight; thus, they require light for this process.
- It is important not to confuse photosynthesis with respiration; plants respire continuously throughout the day by taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.
