Meditation Practice: Embracing the Present Moment
Preparing for Meditation
- Begin by finding a comfortable posture, ensuring there are no unnecessary tensions in the body. Briefly check in with various body parts (face, neck, shoulders, etc.) to release any tension.
- Visualize your surroundings mentally; imagine the walls and your position within the room. Focus on breathing regularly without forcing it—maintain a relaxed state.
Focusing on the Present
- Conceptualize a "doorman" of consciousness who only allows present moment experiences into awareness while keeping past and future thoughts at bay.
- Acknowledge that the past cannot be changed and the future is unknown; thus, focus solely on what is happening now. Welcome any stimuli from the present into your consciousness.
Experiencing Time in the Present
- Embrace every sensation occurring in this moment—sounds from outside or bodily sensations like heartbeat or breath—as valid experiences worthy of attention.
- Recognize that only this instant exists; encapsulate yourself in it, letting go of both past and future concerns.
Finding Peace in Presence
- By excluding worries about past events and future plans, one can experience an unfamiliar peace that arises from being fully present.
- The simplicity of the present moment can be rich with stimuli yet devoid of fear or expectations; savor what unfolds at each instant.
Savoring Existence
- Appreciate your existence as you feel alive in this very moment; acknowledge all sensory information affirming your presence.
- Each individual has their unique experience of presence which contributes to feeling vibrant and alive as time flows second by second.
