Case Binding 5: Attaching the End Pages

How to Prepare End Pages for Book Binding

Cutting and Preparing End Pages

  • Before gluing the book block, it's essential to cut end pages that match the size of the book's pages precisely. This precision is crucial as the edges will not be trimmed later.
  • A cutting mat is recommended for achieving accurate corners. Alternatively, placing a sheet of paper on top of the cutting mat can help guide your cuts.
  • It's acceptable for end pages to be slightly larger than necessary; however, they should ultimately match the page size closely. Folding must also be done with precision.

Attaching End Pages to Book Block

  • Once both end pages are cut and folded, they need to be attached to the book block. It’s easier to apply glue one at a time while ensuring tight folds.
  • Use scrap paper beneath when applying glue to avoid mess. Only a small ridge of glue should be exposed on each end page before aligning them with the edge of the signature.

Video description

This is the fifth video in a nine-part series in which I provide a step-by-step outline of how to bind a case-bound book. Case binding is the most widely-used form of contemporary bookbinding and is a good starting point for anyone who wants to learn how to bind or repair books. These videos are intended for total beginners and also use the most basic of equipment, as I am aware that not everyone has access to formal bookbinding tuition and/or expensive equipment.
