La producción mundial de plántulas ha seguido creciendo y ha evolucionado notablemente en la medida que ha también avanzado la tecnología en los productos y equipos y en el conocimiento del comportamiento de las plantas. Los últimos años se dio énfasis particular al uso eficiente del tiempo, del espacio y del personal a través de la mecanización. Los esfuerzos de la investigación actual están orientados a mejorar la calidad y uniformidad del producto y a evitar pérdidas en la producción. Los productores han rebasado la etapa de conocer los factores que determinan la producción vegetal; ahora están aprendiendo las nuevas tecnologías para modificar dichos factores y obtener plantas de calidad con las especificaciones deseadas. En la Tabla General de Semillas se presentan recomendaciones particulares para un buen número de especies, para producir plántulas de calidad, las cuales fueron tomadas de los apuntes técnicos y normas de producción de BallSeed Company recopiladas y desarrolladas por el Dr. Will Healey.
