Understanding Mechanical Work in Physics

Definition of Mechanical Work

  • Mechanical work occurs when a force is applied to an object, resulting in displacement. The formula for calculating work (W) is given by the product of force (F), displacement (d), and the cosine of the angle between them: W = F cdot d cdot cos(theta) .

Conditions for Work to Occur

  • If there is no displacement, no work is done, even if a force is applied. For example, pushing against a wall does not result in work since the displacement remains zero.

Cases of Displacement and Force Direction

Same Direction and Sense

  • When both force and displacement are in the same direction, the angle between them is 0 degrees. Thus, W = F cdot d cdot cos(0) = F cdot d. This scenario represents the most common case for calculating mechanical work.

Opposite Directions

  • If force opposes displacement (e.g., friction), the angle becomes 180 degrees. Here, W = F cdot d cdot cos(180) = -F cdot d. This indicates that negative work is done by opposing forces like friction during motion.

Perpendicular Forces

  • When force acts perpendicular to displacement (90 degrees), such as lifting luggage while moving horizontally, no work is done because W = F cdot d cdot cos(90) = 0. The perpendicular component does not contribute to mechanical work despite movement occurring due to other forces like propulsion from a motor.

Example Calculation of Work Done

  • To calculate the work done by a 20 N force displacing an object over 3 m in the same direction:
  • Use W = F cdot d:
  • W = 20N * 3m = 60 J.
  • Therefore, the total mechanical work performed equals 60 Joules (J).

Holding an Object Without Displacement

  • When holding an object stationary without any movement (e.g., carrying a suitcase without moving it), although an upward force exists, there’s no displacement; hence:
  • The calculated work remains zero since W = F cdot d where d equals zero regardless of how long it’s held. Thus, sustaining weight does not equate to performing mechanical work.
