Shape Morphing Effect in Davinci Resolve

Shape Morphing Effect in Davinci Resolve

Introduction

In this video, Jeremy from Video to Studio shows how to create a shape into logo morphing effect in DaVinci Resolve.

Creating the SVG File

  • To do this effect, we need an SVG file instead of a PNG file. An SVG file is a vector file that has individual points that can be modified to alter the image.
  • Download an SVG file from svgrepo.com or any other website that provides free SVG files.
  • Use a free website called Vectorizer.io to convert the SVG file into an HD or 4K resolution canvas.

Starting with Fusion

In this section, we start working with Fusion and create a new composition.

Creating a New Composition

  • Drag and drop a new Fusion composition onto the timeline.
  • Move over to Fusion and import the converted SVG file.
  • Place it at the center of the canvas and export it.

Importing Background and Creating Mask

In this section, we import background and create masks for our logo.

Importing Background and Creating Mask

  • Bring in a new background on the Edit page.
  • Link output of background to media out.
  • Select background, click on polygon tool, right-click on center, scroll down to polyline then create.
  • Create rectangle or ellipse as starting point for morph effect.

Morph Effect Preparation

In this section, we prepare for creating morph effect by importing our SVG file into DaVinci Resolve.

Preparing for Morph Effect Creation

  • Import converted SVG file into DaVinci Resolve using Fusion.
  • Link output of camera icon (SVG) to foreground arrow in Dissolve node.
  • Add Transform node by clicking Shift + Space and match size and position of logo to the shape.
  • Add second Transform node, bring down size of both, move it to the side, and create a simple movement animation.

Creating Movement Animation

In this section, we create a movement animation for our morph effect.

Creating Movement Animation

  • Go to frame 0, drop keyframe on center.
  • Go to frame 24 and move over that to the right.
  • Open spline editor, select transform zoom to fit, select two points hit S on keyboard to smooth out curve then hit T to bring easing and ease out parameter.
  • Change ease out parameter to 85.
  • Go halfway through animation at frame 16. Click on dissolve, bring background down to zero. Drop keyframe.
  • Go to frame 18 and bring background foreground up to one.

Conclusion

In this section, we conclude by discussing how the fade-in creates a change of shape that can be enhanced with motion blur.

Conclusion

  • The fade-in creates a change of shape that can be enhanced with motion blur.

Creating a Morphing Effect

In this section, the speaker demonstrates how to create a morphing effect in Davinci Resolve using polygons and animation.

Creating the Morphing Effect

  • To create the morphing effect, activate blur and go to the polygon.
  • Drop a keyframe on frame 0 of the shape.
  • Go to frame 17, select all points, hit shift+s to smooth lines, and unselect.
  • Select each point one by one and move them around the logo.
  • Adjust angles for left-to-right movement.
  • Repeat process with camera elements at frame 24.
  • Match shape of logo to morphing shape at frame 17 by selecting base of camera and moving points around.
  • Smooth out curves with auto point selection (hit s on keyboard).
  • Adjust timing by opening keyframe window and dragging frames.

Adjusting Timing

In this section, the speaker explains how to adjust timing in Davinci Resolve using keyframes.

Moving Keyframes

  • To adjust timing, open spline and keyframe windows.
  • Select first keyframe and drag it to desired frame number.
  • Move last points backward for animation ending at desired frame number.
