Understanding Aging and Elder Care

The Nature of Aging

  • Aging is described as a natural, continuous, and irreversible process that involves gradual changes over time. These changes occur at biological, psychological, and social levels. They are influenced by history, culture, and the economic situation of groups and individuals.

Addressing Elder Abuse

  • Society must not tolerate any form of abuse against the elderly population, including physical, psychological, verbal, patrimonial, or institutional violence. There is a need for societal preparation to ensure this stage of life is as enjoyable as any other.

Professional Support for Quality of Life

  • The College of Professionals in Psychology in Costa Rica emphasizes their readiness to enhance the quality of life for the elderly through various workshops focused on self-care, cognitive stimulation, grief management, crisis intervention, depression screening, and interpersonal relationship management among attendees and residents in day centers and long-term care homes.

Population Projections

  • According to updated estimates from 1950 to 2050 by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), the centenarian population is projected to grow explosively from just over 200 individuals aged 100 or more in 2000 to approximately 55 thousand by 2100. This highlights significant demographic shifts that will impact elder care services.

Interdisciplinary Approach Needed

  • The president of the psychology college stresses that addressing these issues requires interdisciplinary teams with a human rights approach and better inter-institutional coordination as ongoing tasks for society. More discussions on related topics will follow as part of an initiative from the elder care home.
