The Rise of Furiosa AI: Challenging Nvidia

Background of June P and Furiosa AI

  • June P, a former Samsung engineer, founded Furiosa AI after a soccer injury led him to explore AI technology through Stanford's courses.
  • The company is named after the character "Furiosa" from Mad Max, reflecting a bold vision in the tech landscape.

Focus on Inference Over Training

  • While Nvidia's GPUs are dominant in training AI models, Furiosa AI focuses on inference—running trained models efficiently.
  • Their neural processing units (NPUs) are specifically designed for AI calculations and consume significantly less power than traditional GPUs.

Performance and Market Position

  • At Stanford's hot chips conference, Furiosa demonstrated their chips running Meta's LLaMA model with over twice the power efficiency compared to Nvidia’s high-end hardware.
  • Despite an acquisition offer from Meta last year, Furiosa chose to remain independent to continue its innovative path in the market.

South Korean startup FuriosaAI is emerging as a serious challenger to Nvidia in the AI chip market. Founded in 2017 by former Samsung engineer June Paik, the company develops neural processing units designed specifically for AI inference—running models after they're trained. At Stanford's Hot Chips conference, Furiosa demonstrated their RNGD chip running Meta's Llama model with more than twice the power efficiency of Nvidia's hardware. The company, now valued at nearly $700 million, declined an acquisition offer from Meta last year. OpenAI and LG have both tested the chips, reporting strong performance. Mass production of the RNGD chip begins this month.
