Refração da luz: Índice de refração absoluto. 1/4

Introduction to Light Refraction

Understanding Refraction

  • Refraction occurs when light transitions from one material to another, particularly when the materials have different optical properties.
  • A common misconception is that refraction always results in a change of direction; however, this is not guaranteed. The light may or may not deviate.
  • Whenever refraction happens, reflection also occurs. Thus, both phenomena are interconnected during the process.

Index of Refraction

  • The absolute index of refraction is calculated by dividing the speed of light in a vacuum by the speed of light in a given material.
  • The speed of light within a material depends on two factors: the type of material and the color (wavelength) of the light passing through it.

Characteristics and Limits

  • The lowest possible index of refraction is 1, which corresponds to a vacuum. This is because if both speeds (in vacuum and medium) are equal, their ratio equals one.
