Indonesia dikenal sebagai negara kepulauan. Kondisi geografisnya yang strategis dan dikelilingi perairan, Indonesia juga kaya akan sumber daya alam. Bahkan, sebagian masyarakat Indonesia pun masih mengandalkan sumber daya alam untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya. Salah satu profesi yang lekat kaitannya dengan perairan adalah nelayan. Adanya sumber daya perairan, masyarakat menggantungkan hidup dari tangkapan ikan setiap harinya. Selama 15 tahun belakangan, nelayan tradisional di kota kawasan Danau Toba kian terpuruk. Ketidakseimbangan ekosistem Danau Toba saat ini menjadi pemicu minimnya jumlah tangkapan ikan nelayan, termasuk kontribusi limbah domestik. Untuk menanggulangi hal itu warga di sekitar Danau Toba melestarikan sebuah tradisi yang disebut Mardoton. Mardoton merupakan salah satu kekayaan intelektual para pendahulu di pinggiran Danau Toba untuk menghidupi keluarganya. Sampai hari ini mardoton masih menjadi bagian sistem mata pencaharian sebagian masyarakat di sana. Sebelum gelaran Mardoton, biasanya masyarakat menggelar serangkaian prosesi. Prosesi ini dilakukan sebelum menurunkan solu atau perahu ke Danau Toba. Tujuannya agar perahu yang digunakan untuk mencari ikan bisa membawa keberuntungan. Setelah itu, masyarakat membuat sesajian yang dibuat dari tepung beras sebagai media untuk berdoa kepada Sang Pencipta melalui Namboru Saneang Naga Laut, yang dalam kepercayaan masyarakat Danau Toba diyakini sebagai Dewi Air. Solu adalah perahu tradisional Batak Toba. Perahu kayu dengan papan tambahan di sisi yang diikat dengan paku payung besi. Ukurannya bermacam-macam, yang terbesar, untuk 50 pendayung, panjangnya sekitar 18 meter; ada sedikit lunas yang diukir di bagian depan dan belakang.
