Drain and Sewer Piping Systems – Installation and Air Testing | Polypipe Civils
Installation and Testing of Socketed Rigid Drain Piping Systems
This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to install and test socketed rigid drain piping systems using ring seal joints.
Trench and Base Preparation
- Mark the ground for trench excavation.
- Excavate the trench to the correct width and depth according to engineering drawings.
- Set up a laser pointing upstream inside the first manhole or location pipe connection to determine gradient line and level required.
- Level out the trench and drop in subgrade keeping laser level in mind according to engineering instructions.
Jointing Preparation
- Clean external pipe surface of spigot end and rubber seal to remove any dirt.
- Measure internal depth of receiving socket and mark this depth on spigot end of joining pipe as a guide when joining so you know when the pipe is home.
- Ensure you're using correct EPDM or nitrile seal for pipe diameter, then place seal correctly into first reset of spigot end of pipe.
- Apply liberal amount of polypipe lubricant all around spigot end and seal.
Pipe Jointing
- Clean internal socket of receiving pipe or chamber to remove any dirt, dust, or debris before applying poly pipe lubricant to internal surface depending on size.
- Lower smaller diameter pipes up to 300 millimeters by hand; anything greater than 300 millimeters will require mechanical assistance such as lifting equipment.
- Align spigot of the pipe into the receiving socket it's being joined to, then prepare it to join the pipe.
- Inspect joint to ensure alignment is correct and check that there is no foreign material or dirt infiltrating the joint and check that the seal has stayed in place.
Air Testing
- Complete a successful air test of the joint for leaks before back sewing.
- Check that bungs are in good condition if using inflatable bungs, check that they are not cracked and free from dirt.
- Check that steel bonds are free from damage, rubber is in good condition, not cracked, and free from dirt; check center cap is on center port and tight and seals use PTFE tape if necessary after all checks have been done insert bung into each end of pipe line leaving a 25-millimeter gap from bung to end of pipe.
- Fill up with water to zero point next add air into outside of bung to secure a tight fit connect manometer to inner bond connection port and increase pressure until it reads 100 millimeters water gauge or 0.01 bar allow air pressure to stabilize for few moments and increase pressure to 100 millimeters order gage if required hold air test for five minutes record reading this should not fall below seventy-five millimeters water gauge or 25% over five-minute period.
Backfilling
- Stake wooden board in place before you begin backfilling this will hold the pipe in position and prevent any of the backfill entering the pipe then backfill around the pipe in accordance with the engineering specifications.
