Genetic Causes of Variation

Environmental Influences on Variation
Environmental factors can also cause variation; for instance, flower color may change based on soil pH. Language development in humans is another example influenced by the environment.
Combination of Genetics and Environment
Height in humans exemplifies how genetics and environment interact; while certain alleles may predispose individuals to be taller, adequate nutrition is essential for achieving that potential.
Role of Mutations in Variation
Genetic variation within populations largely stems from mutations—random changes to DNA that occur frequently but often have no effect on phenotype.
Some mutations can influence phenotypes significantly; for example, specific alleles may lead to traits like tallness if dietary conditions are favorable.
