Task vs Relationship Culture

Task vs Relationship Culture

Welcome and Introduction

The video introduces the topic of task-oriented culture versus relationship-oriented culture.

Task-Oriented vs. Relationship-Oriented Culture

  • Task-oriented culture focuses on business tasks immediately, while relationship-oriented culture prioritizes building trust through personal connections before discussing business.
  • Misalignment in approaches between task and relationship orientation can lead to failed agreements and misunderstandings in cross-cultural interactions.
  • Distinguishing between task and relationship orientation is crucial for building trust in cross-cultural settings with business partners, teammates, or individuals.
  • Trust forms the basis of relationships in both task and relationship-oriented cultures, impacting various aspects of life including leadership styles, team dynamics, business negotiations, and personal interactions.
  • Task orientation emphasizes completing business tasks first with trust developing over time. In contrast, relationship orientation prioritizes building trust before engaging in business activities.

Attributes of Task-Oriented and Relationship-Oriented People

This section delves into the characteristics of individuals based on their task or relationship orientation.

Task-Oriented People

  • Task-oriented individuals define others by their roles and focus on work efficiency over personal relationships.
  • They establish superficial relationships quickly, prioritize work over leisure time, use impersonal criteria for selection like resumes or test scores, and allow work to encroach on personal time.

Relationship-Oriented People

  • Relationship-oriented individuals value personal connections over tasks, establishing deep relationships before engaging in business.
  • They prioritize leisure time and family commitments over work responsibilities, use personal criteria for selection such as family connections, and maintain a clear boundary between work and personal life.

Video description

Are you rather task- or relationship- oriented? Task vs Relationship Culture is the subject studied in this video. Some cultures (often in Western societies) are more task-oriented whereas other societies (mainly in the southern hemisphere) are more relationship-oriented. When people with this different worldview work and live with each other, misunderstandings can arise. Especially the building of solid relationships demands that the two parties trust each other. The cultural misunderstanding of task- or relationship-orientation can easily destroy such a trust relationship. We will discuss the different traits of task and relationship-orientation and will see what countries prefer which style. Content is adapted from: The Culture Map, 2014.
