Understanding Pastel Restoration Techniques

Assessing the Condition of Pastels

  • The initial step in pastel restoration involves a thorough assessment of the artwork's condition, focusing on both the pastel medium and the canvas technique.
  • Notably, there were significant mold issues present in the hair area of the artwork, indicating a need for careful treatment.

Dust Removal Process

  • A meticulous dust removal process is essential as dust poses a threat to pastels; it requires using specialized tools for effective cleaning.
  • A micro-inspiration technique is employed to eliminate maximum dust particles from the surface without damaging the pastel.

Mold Treatment and Consolidation

  • After addressing dust, treatment for mold is conducted using a specific tool known as a "fripette pasteur," which aids in delicate cleaning.
  • The consolidation process includes inserting tinted Japanese paper behind areas needing support, enhancing both stability and aesthetic appeal.

🌍 Discover the restoration of Rosalba Carriera's portrait of Louis XV as a child, a pastel that joined the collections in July 2024. 🖼 It is currently on display in the château's exhibition space, in a space dedicated to the presentation of recent acquisitions (after the Coronation Room). 🎨 This portrait was created during the stay in France of the Venetian pastel artist, Rosalba Carriera.
