FAA Part 107 Study Guide [How To Read A Sectional Chart 2024]

Introduction to Part 107 Knowledge Test

Overview: This video provides an overview of the Part 107 Knowledge Test and how to use the testing supplement.

Using the Testing Supplement

  • The testing supplement is a book of images used to reference questions on the exam. It is important to double check that the code in the top right corner matches the images.
  • Legends and figures are laid out in order, making it easy to find the relevant image.

Question 1: Line of Latitude at Area 4

Overview: This video explains how to answer the question "What does the line of latitude at area 4 measure?"

Latitude

  • Latitude is measured laterally with the Earth's surface, going around the Earth from the equator (0 degrees) to the North Pole (90 degrees North) and South Pole (90 degrees South).
  • Latitude lines are depicted on the chart parallel to the equator, going east to west and written every 30 minutes (each degree is 16 minutes).

Question 2: Airport Location

Overview: This video explains how to answer the question "What airport is located approximately 47 degrees and 40 minutes north latitude and 101 degrees and 26 minutes west longitude?"

Finding the Airport

  • Refer to Figure 21 and start by finding the latitude line of 47 degrees and 40 minutes north. Each dash is one minute, so count five dashes to get to 40 minutes.
  • Then, find the longitude line of 101 degrees and 26 minutes west. Each dash is one minute, so count four dashes to get to 26 minutes.
  • The airport is located at the intersection of these two lines, which is Garson Airport.

Question 3: Floor of Stefan Savannah Class Charlie Airspace

Overview: This video explains how to answer the question "What is the floor of the Stefan Savannah Class Charlie airspace at the shelf area outer circle?"

Floor of Airspace

  • Refer to Figure 23 to find the floor of the Stefan Savannah Class Charlie airspace.
  • The floor of the airspace is depicted by the dashed line labeled "SFC" (surface).

Understanding Airspace

Overview: This section covers the basics of airspace, including the different classes of airspace, the meaning of msl and agl altitudes, and how to identify military routes.

Classification of Airspace

  • Class Charlie airspace is always depicted in msl (Mean Sea Level) altitudes because planes use msl and not agl (Above Ground Level).

Identifying Military Routes

  • Gray lines with four-digit numbers (e.g. VR1667) indicate military routes. These routes are used for high-velocity aircraft and present a hazard to small UAs.

Checking NOTAMs

  • The best way to check NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen) is to obtain a weather briefing from 1-800-WXBRIEF.com or by calling the service.

Midfield Left Downwind

  • When an aircraft announces that they are midfield left downwind on a runway, they are located in the middle of the runway, facing the opposite direction of the runway.

Unmarked Balloon on Cable Hazard

Overview: This section discusses the hazard of an unmarked balloon on a cable up to 3,008 feet MSL near Elizabeth City Regional Airport.

Location of Hazard

  • The aircraft is east of the airport.
  • Zoom in on Figure 22 on page 55.

CTAF Frequency

  • On the sectional, the AWOS frequency for weather is 135.075.
  • The altitude of the airport is 2320'L, with pilot-controlled lighting.
  • The CTAF frequency is 122.8 with a "C".

ATC Authorization

  • The controlling agency for airspace is always ATC.
  • Contact ATC prior to flying your unmanned aircraft in this area.

Unmarked Balloon Hazard

  • Go to Figure 20 on page 53.
  • Follow the line four statute miles southeast of Elizabeth City Regional Airport.
  • The hazard indicated is an unmarked balloon on a cable up to 3,008 feet MSL.
