Understanding the Respiratory System
Overview of the Respiratory Process
- The respiratory system extracts oxygen from the air, which is essential for cellular life and development, while also eliminating carbon dioxide produced by cells after using oxygen.
- Breathing is an involuntary and automatic process; air enters through the nose where it is filtered, warmed, and moistened to prevent dirt from reaching the lungs.
- Air travels through the pharynx and larynx into the trachea, which splits into bronchi leading into the lungs. Inside the lungs, air moves through smaller branches called bronchioles.
- The primary function of the lungs is to absorb oxygen from inhaled air and expel unnecessary carbon dioxide. Alveoli facilitate this gas exchange by transferring oxygen to blood for distribution throughout the body.
Role of Diaphragm in Breathing
- The diaphragm, located beneath the lungs, plays a crucial role in inhalation (filling lungs with air) and exhalation (expelling unneeded air).
- Exhaled air contains carbon dioxide and waste substances; it can be felt as warm when breathed out.
