Tellus Geochemistry Field Programme: Sample Collection Guidelines
Overview of Sample Collection
- The Tellus geochemistry field programme emphasizes the careful collection of samples from streams, including stream water, sediment, heavy mineral concentrates, and vegetation.
- Selecting a suitable site for sample collection is crucial; it must be accessible and safe to work in while ensuring that it represents the upstream catchment area.
Sampling Process
- At the chosen site, record the exact location using a handheld GPS unit and verify it against a 1:50,000-scale field map. Both team members should participate in this verification process.
- Non-metallic sampling equipment is preferred to avoid contamination from metals or other elements during sample collection. A 'site bag' containing necessary containers is used by sampling teams.
Container Preparation
- All containers must be labeled before sampling begins. This ensures consistency and accuracy in tracking samples. Use a six-figure site number for labeling.
- On larger bottles meant for filtered and acidified samples (denoted as ‘F/A’), write numbers legibly starting from the cap end. Smaller bottles are labeled as ‘F/UA’ for filtered and un-acidified samples.
Additional Equipment Details
- The site bag includes two reusable bottles for collecting unfiltered stream water, which will be tested later at the field base. Each bottle should only have the site number written on it.
