The golf lesson that destroys your iron play that they still teach (golf swing tip)

Stop Hitting Down at the Golf Ball

In this section, the speaker explains why hitting down at the golf ball is a mistake and how it can hurt your golf shots. He also provides tips on how to fix your iron strikes.

The Feeling You Need

  • When hitting your golf shots, you want your club with an iron hitting down at the ball so that it passes down touching the ground and then hits the ball.
  • The feeling of hitting down is not exactly how it happens, but you want the club passing down with an iron shot.
  • De-lofting the iron will require some amount of handle lean.

Problems with Trying to Hit Down

  • Trying to push that club down into the ground causes golfers to bury the club and slam it into the ground.
  • Golfers tend to have a disassociation between their hands and head, which affects their low point strike, club buff, and face direction.

Pulling Handle Down

  • People try to hit down by pulling that handle down so they're trying to pull the club down because they want to hit down.
  • The more they pull the handle down, the more the head stays up. If it stays up for too long, there's going to be a crash at some point.

Relationship Between Ends of Club

  • Having a strong relationship between this end (handle) and this end (clubhead) helps control low point strike, club buff, and face direction.
  • Many golfers have a disassociation between these two ends.

Simple Tip for Better Iron Strikes

  • Make your normal backswing just go to the top of the backswing.
  • Take trail hand off and stay in your positions for maybe five to six seconds until your body starts to shake a bit like your body wants to give up.

Letting the Club Go and Reconnecting with It

In this section, the instructor explains how to let the club go a few inches to feel the head weight compared to the grip. The goal is to get a feeling of letting that club lay down before reconnecting with it to try and pull it up and through.

Getting a Feel for Laying Down the Club

  • Let the club go a few inches, start laying down, dropping behind you.
  • Trail hand back on and then just grab on and swing that club out in front of you.
  • This will give you that feeling of letting that club lay down before reconnecting with it to try and pull it up and through.

Making a Realistic Backswing

  • Do a few bad ones so up to the top then from here what I want you to do is just try and stack this end on top of that end to stack them up reconnect.
  • This will help feel how different that feels for path and for interactions with the ground.
  • The little lay down of the shaft is going to allow us to get much better connections with the ground not crash.

Applying Techniques for Driver

In this section, the instructor explains how what he has talked about in this video will apply to your driver as well but there are nuances there's differences that make them work with an upward angle of attack compared to downward.

Differences Between Iron Shots & Driver Shots

  • What we do with irons applies similarly but not quite exactly same as drivers because they work differently due their upward angle of attack compared downward.

Getting the Club Head Below the Hands

In this section, the instructor explains how to get the club head below the hands and level to below the hand.

Laying Down of Shaft

  • The feeling of the shaft slightly laying down will allow us to get that club swinging out to that ball and hopefully get that head coming down getting below the hands level to below the hand.

Getting Rid of Desire to Hit Down

  • Get rid of this desire to really kind of hit down when your hands and with clubs.
  • This is done by trying to feel like they're pulling up with handle to get club out and down in front of them.

Pressure Shift Drill

In this section, the instructor explains a drill for pressure shifts which you're going to need in this video which he's going to show you which will be third point.

Pressure Shift Drill

  • Stand over ball and hold on metal of club with opposite right thigh here.
  • Try and get this club coming up and towards you so from this position it's downswing, handle starts coming up and towards you throwing that club out and down.
  • This move is absolutely going to transform your ability to strike.

Improving Ball Striking

In this section, the speaker discusses how to improve ball striking by getting the handle up and around and shallow interaction with the ground.

Getting the Handle Up and Around

  • Move up while burying down on lead leg
  • Release and change position of hands for better impact
  • Get left side coming up and around to get club down

Shallow Interaction with Ground

  • Set club down for shallower interaction with ground
  • Take divot while maintaining handle lean
  • Let go of club instead of pulling it down for better strike

Pressure Control Drill

In this section, the speaker provides a drill to help golfers control their pressure when hitting the ball.

Pressure Control Drill

  • Narrow stance with lead foot
  • Finish backswing as you step back to normal width stance
  • Get pressure re-centering on lead foot for better strike

Blurry for the Best Players in the World

In this section, the speaker talks about how the best players in the world blur the lines between their backswing and downswing to achieve better strikes. The speaker encourages listeners to start doing this as well.

Blurring Backswing and Downswing

  • Blurring the lines between backswing and downswing takes practice.
  • Start your downswing before finishing your backswing.
  • Push up and out of lead side to get a better strike.
  • This technique is useful for fixing irons and hitting better drivers.

Overall, this section emphasizes that blurring the lines between backswing and downswing can help golfers achieve better strikes.
