Learn about our anchovy fishmeal process

Fish Meal Production Process

This video explains the process of producing fish meal from anchovy, a valuable and sustainable species that is fished responsibly. The process involves four stages: unloading and storage, cooking and pressing, drying, and cooling, grinding, and packaging.

Unloading and Storage

  • Fresh anchovies are unloaded onto floating platforms called chatas.
  • Water is added to the boat to generate a mixture of water with fish that allows the pumping of the raw material without deterioration.
  • The fish is pumped from the boat through underwater pipes to the production plant's drains.
  • The raw material is weighed in hoppers before being distributed to ponds for storage.

Cooking and Pressing

  • After being transported by helical screws to a pan, the anchovy goes to a feeder hopper that distributes it to kitchens for cooking.
  • The cooked product goes through a pre-strainer that carries out the first stage of draining before being deposited in presses that separate the liquid portion from the solid portion.
  • Recovered solids are included in this stage to use most of the raw material while complying with maximum permissible limits.
  • Liquid products are treated in an oil plant to produce oil for human consumption.

Drying

  • The whole cake goes through three drying stages where its moisture content is gradually reduced using rotating discs, rotating tube systems, and hot air dryers.

Cooling, Grinding, and Packaging

  • After drying, scrap is cooled before being transferred to mills where it becomes finer particles until obtaining perfect granulate form for clients.
  • An antioxidant is applied before the final product is placed in 50-kilo sacks that are sown and transported by trucks to warehouses for distribution.

Conclusion

  • TASA, the world's largest exporter of high-quality fish meal, produces a sustainable and reliable product that has received various awards and recognitions for its good environmental management and sustainable approach.
Video description

In this video you will be able to know how the anchovy, after being caught, reaches our facilities and becomes the fishmeal that makes possible to sustain the world's nutrition (Here you can see how we caught the anchovy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCVpAqOvLX0). Fishmeal is used for the rearing of other fish (aquaculture), pigs (pig farming) and poultry (poultry farming). These proteins come back to us in our daily dishes. The anchovy is caught following the quota system that is recognized internationally as one of the best in the world and that has allowed the anchovy to multiply and be sustainable over time.
