The Rise of Christianity and the Reformation
The Transformation of the Church
- In the final years of the Roman Empire, Christianity became the official religion, leading to the church evolving into a parallel government in Europe. This shift distanced it from original Christian values, focusing more on earthly power than spiritual salvation.
- By 1517, to fund St. Peter's Basilica, the church initiated a campaign selling indulgences—essentially paying for forgiveness of sins. This practice sparked significant controversy.
Martin Luther's Challenge
- On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses at Wittenberg Cathedral, condemning abusive church practices. What began as a reform proposal escalated into a religious movement opposing Rome.
- The theological core of Lutheran Reformation is encapsulated in three principles:
- Sola Gratia: Salvation comes solely through God's grace.
- Sola Fide: Faith alone grants salvation; good works are not sufficient.
- Sola Scriptura: The Bible is the only source of religious authority.
Individual Interpretation and Authority
- With scripture being accessible to all believers, individuals were encouraged to interpret it personally without needing an intermediary like the church. This diminished the church's role as an ultimate arbiter of knowledge and promoted individual conscience and understanding in matters of faith.
