La Eduteca - El aire y la atmósfera
How is the Air We Breathe Composed?
Composition of Air
- The air we breathe is a mixture of various gases, primarily nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.
- Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere, followed by oxygen which is essential for living beings. Carbon dioxide is produced by respiration and from sources like factories and wildfires.
Understanding the Atmosphere
- The atmosphere consists of two main parts: the lower part closest to Earth where weather phenomena occur (like wind and rain), and the upper part which has very little oxygen.
- The air remains a mixture of gases with nitrogen and oxygen being predominant.
Characteristics of Air
- Clean air is transparent, tasteless, weighs more when filled (as seen in an inflated balloon), occupies space without having its own shape.
- Air plays crucial roles such as enabling sound travel, allowing flight for animals and aircraft, and supporting combustion processes.
