Malaria Prevention in Zimbabwe

The Impact of Climate on Malaria Risk

  • Zimbabwe's tropical climate is characterized as hot and humid, creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
  • Vulnerable populations include pregnant women, children under five, older adults, and individuals who are malnourished or living with HIV/AIDS. These groups face a heightened risk of severe malaria effects.

Asunder's Protective Measures Against Malaria

  • Asunder takes proactive steps to safeguard her family from malaria by utilizing insecticide-treated mosquito nets over all sleeping areas, ensuring nightly protection against mosquito bites.
  • To further reduce mosquito breeding sites, she covers water containers with lids and eliminates stagnant water around her home. This practice helps prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in standing water.
  • Asunder also permits her house to be treated with anti-mosquito products, enhancing the overall safety of her living environment against these pests.

Comparison with Neighbor's Approach

  • In contrast to Asunder’s protective measures, her neighbor Tendai does not use mosquito nets for his family’s protection against mosquitoes. Instead, he relies on alternative methods that may not be as effective in preventing malaria transmission.
