Tratamientos de la epilepsia en los niños
What is Epilepsy and How is it Treated?
Understanding Epilepsy
- Epilepsy is a brain condition characterized by at least two seizures over time. There is no cure for most types, but treatments exist to manage seizures.
- The most common treatment involves antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), also known as anticonvulsants or seizure medications. Most seizures can be controlled with these medications.
Alternative Treatments
- For some patients, particularly those whose seizures are not manageable with medication, a special diet called the ketogenic diet may help reduce certain types of seizures. This diet is high in fats and low in carbohydrates.
- If medications fail, healthcare providers may recommend surgical procedures to stop seizures by removing the part of the brain responsible for them.
Surgical Interventions
- One surgical option includes vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), which involves implanting a device under the skin of the chest that connects to the vagus nerve in the neck. This device emits short bursts of electrical energy to help reduce seizure frequency.
