Understanding Project Management: Establishing Baselines
The Complexity of Project Management
- Managing a project involves tracking progress and may require adjustments to the original plan while still allowing for comparison against initial projections.
- The concept of baselines is introduced as a reference point to identify deviations from the planned activities, typically established post-planning and pre-execution.
Generating a Baseline in ProjectLibre
- In ProjectLibre, after completing the planning phase, users can create a baseline using the "Save Baseline" option found under both the Task tab and File tab.
- Up to 11 baselines can be generated, which can apply to either the entire project or selected tasks; visual representation appears in gray lines on the Gantt chart.
Tracking Changes in Activities
- Once a baseline is set, it allows for effective monitoring of project activities. For instance, if an activity's schedule changes due to external factors (e.g., client delays), this must be updated in the system.
- An example is provided where a meeting scheduled for March 6th was postponed to March 8th; updating this change reflects immediately on the Gantt chart.
Understanding Deviations with Baselines
- After adjusting task dates, users can see how these changes affect dependent activities within the project timeline.
- The unchanged gray baseline remains visible, helping users assess deviations from their original plan effectively.
Recording Progress and Delays
- Creating baselines not only tracks delays but also records advancements; if an activity takes less time than planned (e.g., completed in two days instead of three), it will show as an improvement on the Gantt chart.
- This dual capability emphasizes that baselines are essential tools for comprehensive project management beyond just noting setbacks.
