Das Projekt könnte die alte Weltordnung auf den Kopf stellen. Weltweit investiert China in Brücken, Häfen, Bahntrassen und Straßen. Mehrere hundert Milliarden Euro gibt der chinesische Staat für seinen Traum von der der Neuen Seidenstraße aus. Der chinesische Präsident Xi Jinping verspricht, Entwicklungschancen und Reichtum für China und die gesamte Welt. Die Infrastrukturprojekte werden jedoch meist von Chinesen umgesetzt. Nach der griechischen Finanzkrise wollte kein europäisches Land mehr in Griechenland investieren - nur die Chinesen witterten den Deal und kauften Anteile am Hafen von Piräus. 2016 übernahmen sie dann die Mehrheitsanteile der Hafengesellschaft. Die griechische Gewerkschaft der Hafenarbeiter arrangiert sich bis heute mehr schlecht als recht damit, dass der Hafen nicht mehr griechisches Eigentum ist. Italien ist 2019 Teil der Neuen Seidenstraße geworden. Investitionen in den Hafen von Triest, im Norden des Landes, waren schon fest verabredet.
