How to Position a Patient in Right Lateral Decubitus

Initial Patient Positioning

• To position the patient in the right lateral decubitus, it is essential for them to be shifted towards the left side of the bed. This requires using a third person (helper).

• The helper instructs the patient to place their hands on their torso or does so if the patient is unconscious. The helper should grasp as close to the patient's body as possible for better leverage.

• A coordinated effort begins with a count of three, initiating the movement.

Adjusting and Supporting the Patient

• After shifting, ensure that both the sheet and positioning are smooth without wrinkles. This helps maintain comfort and prevents skin issues.

• Extend the patient's right arm away from their body to avoid pinching during movement. Bend their left knee slightly and rotate them gently to facilitate easier positioning.

• Support behind the shoulder blade with one hand while adjusting their position, ensuring they are comfortable.

Finalizing Comfort and Safety

• Place a pillow under the patient's head and adjust their body to prevent an uncomfortable 90-degree angle that could lead to injuries.

• Insert another pillow between their legs, keeping the upper leg slightly flexed for comfort, along with placing a pillow under their arm to prevent edema.
