India's Strategic Underground Railway Project
Overview of the Siliguri Corridor
India is developing an underground railway project in a highly vulnerable area known as the Siliguri Corridor, also referred to as the "Chicken Neck."
This corridor is only 22 km wide and serves as a critical link connecting Northeast India to the mainland.
Strategically, it is considered India's most crucial chokepoint; disruption here could isolate several states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
Recent Developments and Risks
Recent developments have heightened risks associated with this corridor. Bangladesh has openly discussed cutting off access to the Chicken Neck.
Additionally, Bangladesh's decision to redevelop the Lal Munirhat Airbase poses further threats due to its proximity to this sensitive region.
The area is already sensitive because it borders China, Nepal, and Bhutan; thus any conflict could make it a primary target.
Details of the Underground Railway Line
To address these vulnerabilities, Indian Railways is constructing a 35.6 km long underground railway line.
This railway will run from Mahananda River near Bagdogra and will be located 20 to 24 meters below ground level.
At this depth, detecting or targeting the railway with missiles or airstrikes becomes extremely difficult.
The project will directly connect with Bagdogra Air Force Station and Indian Army military infrastructure.
