The Muscular System - Levator Scapulae
Analyzing the Levator Scapulae Muscle
In this video, we will analyze the levator scapulae muscle, which is a muscle of the posterior side of the body that covers the neck region. It is an upper body pulling muscle and contributes to our body pulling exercises.
Naming and Location
- The levator scapulae muscle gets its name from both its function and location.
- "Levata" refers to a muscle that lifts or elevates a body part, while "scapula" refers to the scapular bone.
- This muscle lifts the scapula.
Origin and Insertion
- The levator scapulae crosses the scapulothoracic joint.
- It originates along the cervical vertebrae and inserts onto the superior and medial surface of the scapular shoulder blade.
Joint Actions
- When this muscle contracts or shortens, it causes scapular elevation.
- It also assists in rotating the scapula downwards through scapular downward rotation.
Exercises
- The levator scapulae assists in exercises such as shrugs, upright rows, and seated rows.
