Para entender la historia de la humanidad, estamos obligados a conocer la cultura y el arte, que son en realidad la expresión colectiva e individual de una sociedad y de quienes la constituyen. Dentro de las numerosas disciplinas que componen el arte en sí, vamos a detenernos en una de las más antiguas y que ha estado presente en todo el proceso evolutivo del hombre: la pintura. Podemos definir la pintura como el arte de reproducir un hecho o persona, real o imaginaria, por medio del color y la forma. La pintura es una de las expresiones artísticas en que primero se manifestó la voluntad de reproducir la interrelación del ser humano con la naturaleza y al mismo tiempo su intento de entenderla y dominarla. Para poder estudiar la historia de la pintura universal es necesario hacerlo a través de los distintos estilos artísticos que siempre han ido unidos a los distintos periodos históricos de la humanidad. Desde las pinturas rupestres hasta el maravilloso mundo del impresionismo y del simbolismo ya en el siglo XX. Pero sin olvidarnos nunca del artista y del mundo que le rodea.
