How to Play Volleyball for Beginners STEP-BY-STEP
Understanding Volleyball Rules and Terminology
Basic Structure of Volleyball
- Volleyball consists of six players per team on the court at all times. The game starts with a player serving the ball from position one.
- After the serve, both teams play out the rally. If the serving team wins a point, they continue to serve until they lose a point.
Key Terminology in Volleyball
- Block: A technique used to deflect an opponent's hit, aiming to prevent the ball from crossing over to their side.
- Kill: An instant point scored when a player hits the ball hard into an open spot where it cannot be returned.
- Attack: Involves jumping while approaching to hit the ball effectively.
- Bump/Pass: The first contact made to receive the ball, typically passed to the setter.
Serving and Scoring
- Serve: The initial contact that starts each round; its goal is to send the ball over the net into the opponent's area for potential scoring.
- A rally refers to continuous plays between serves and points, involving multiple passes, sets, and hits.
Violations in Volleyball
- Common violations include:
- Letting the ball land on your side of the court.
- Stepping over baseline during service.
- Touching net during play or attacking before reaching attack line as a back row player.
- Hitting or serving into net/out of bounds.
Winning Conditions and Substitutions
- Matches are played in either 5 sets (to 25 points) or sometimes in 3 sets (to 25 points) with final set rules varying by age group. Teams must win by at least two points.
- Each team can call two timeouts per match; substitutions are limited to six per set. Blocks do not count as touches allowing for additional contacts after attempting a block.
Additional Insights
- Players can kick the ball but diving is preferred by coaches based on experience.
