Reanimación Cardiopulmonar (RCP) en lactantes - desde el nacimiento hasta 1 año de edad
CPR in Infants Under One Year
Initial Assessment and Emergency Response
- Before starting CPR, ensure your safety and that nothing can harm you.
- If the infant is unresponsive, check for responsiveness by touching their foot and speaking loudly. Do not shake the baby.
- There are three scenarios to consider:
- If accompanied, ask someone to call local emergency services.
- If alone with a cell phone, call for an ambulance using speakerphone.
- If alone without a cell phone, begin CPR immediately.
Performing CPR on Infants
- Check for breathing by observing chest movements. Use two fingers to compress the lower half of the sternum about one-third of its depth (approximately 4 cm).
- Perform compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute. After every 30 compressions, give two breaths.
- To provide breaths:
- Open the airway by placing one hand on the forehead and lifting the chin with two fingers from the other hand.
- Cover both mouth and nose of the infant with your mouth to create a seal; deliver two breaths lasting one second each while watching for chest rise.
Continuous Evaluation During CPR
- Reassess if there is no improvement after five cycles of compressions and breaths:
- Evaluate compression effectiveness: strong and fast at a depth of about 4 cm.
- Assess breath effectiveness: proper head position, seal quality, and forcefulness of exhalation.
