Bone Densitometry: Understanding the Procedure

What is Bone Densitometry?

  • Bone densitometry is a test that measures the bone density of the spine and hip, assessing fracture risk by comparing density to that of a young adult. A significantly lower density may indicate osteoporosis.

Non-Invasive Nature of the Test

  • The procedure is non-invasive, requiring no needles or contrast agents. It uses a very low dose of radiation, posing minimal risk; however, it is contraindicated for pregnant women due to potential fetal effects.

Pre-Test Considerations

  • Patients do not need to fast before the test and can take their medications as usual. It's important to inform the technician if any contrast tests were done in the two weeks prior.

Preparation for the Test

  • Upon arrival at the bone densitometry unit, patients will change into a gown and must remove all metallic objects like clips or zippers to avoid interference with measurements.

Conducting the Test

  • For spinal measurement, patients lie on a table with support under their legs for comfort. The technician positions them correctly for accurate readings. If spine or hip cannot be measured, an alternative measurement from the distal forearm may be taken.
