Behavior of Rivers
Mountain streams are constrained by steep valleys, while rivers in plains have more freedom to shift their banks.
Disturbances like a muskrat burrowing can cause riverbanks to crumble, altering the course of the river.
Slow-moving water deposits dirt, making the water shallower and slower on one side while eroding the other bank.
Meandering rivers exhibit a regular pattern where the length of an S-shaped meander is about six times the width of the channel.
Rivers continue to meander until they loop around themselves, leaving crescent-shaped remnants.
