The Role of New Generations in Brazilian Cooperativism

Introduction to the Guests and Context

  • João Vittor introduces Franciele de Assiso, a communication and marketing advisor at SCRED Biraiaras and member of the Geração C committee, focusing on youth's impact on Brazilian cooperativism.
  • Franciele shares her background in communication and marketing, highlighting her five years of experience and recent involvement with the Geração C committee.

Recent Mission to Argentina

  • The Geração C committee planned an exchange mission to San Chales, Argentina, known as a hub for cooperativism. This trip was organized in collaboration with OCERGs and Casa Cooperativa de Nova Petrópolis.
  • A group of 38 young representatives from various cooperatives traveled by bus for 24 hours to reach their destination, engaging in extensive activities over three days.

Insights from San Chales

  • Over 80% of San Chales' GDP is generated by cooperatives, showcasing the city's strong cooperative culture. One notable example includes a cooperative providing potable water services instead of private companies.
  • The Sancor insurance cooperative plays a significant role in employment within the city and supports social initiatives like school cooperatives through its foundation. This highlights the importance of fostering cooperative education from an early age.

Cultural Comparisons: Brazil vs Argentina

  • Similarities between San Chales and Nova Petrópolis were noted; both cities have strong partnerships and share symbols representing their commitment to cooperativism, such as monuments dedicated to this cause.
  • Differences include the scale of operations; while some Brazilian cooperatives serve local communities, larger Argentine cooperatives provide services for entire cities, emphasizing collective development goals across generations.

Importance of Youth Engagement in Cooperativism

Youth as Future Leaders

  • Franciele emphasizes that youth are crucial for the future of cooperativism since they will soon take on leadership roles within these organizations. Preparing them involves understanding cooperative values deeply rather than merely occupying positions.

Educational Impact on Young People

  • Exposure to cooperative principles starts early through school-based programs where students can hold leadership roles within their own school cooperatives, enhancing their public speaking skills and confidence levels significantly.

Challenges in Retaining Interest Among Youth

  • Engaging young people remains challenging due to widespread ignorance about what cooperativism entails; thus, it is essential for organizations to make themselves more relevant and accessible through modern technology and innovative communication strategies.

Future Perspectives on Cooperative Development

Protagonists of Change

  • The new generation is seen as pivotal for advancing discussions around inclusion and sustainability within the cooperative movement; examples like Vittor illustrate how consistent engagement leads to impactful contributions later in life.

Conclusion: Embracing Transformation

  • There’s a call for respect towards historical practices while also encouraging innovation among younger members; this balance is vital for evolving Brazil's cooperative landscape effectively moving forward into new challenges ahead.
