How to Administer an Intramuscular Injection in Poultry

In this video, Kelly from BakBaku K teaches viewers how to administer an intramuscular injection in poultry, specifically chickens. She emphasizes that it is not hard and provides a step-by-step guide.

Materials Needed

  • A needle syringe
  • Medication
  • Air

Preparing the Syringe

  • Take off the lid of the syringe.
  • Fill up the amount that you're going to inject with air.
  • Get your medication and stick it in.
  • Put the air in and then draw the medication into the syringe.
  • Release any air bubbles trapped by smacking with your finger.

Administering the Injection

  • Feel for your chicken's crop, which will feel like a big water balloon.
  • Go directly under that and feel for the breastbone in the middle.
  • Inject on either side of the breastbone where there is no feather or hair.
  • If necessary, grab them by both feet with your hands and hold them upside down to administer injection.

Alternative Injection Sites

If there is not enough breast tissue or muscle, you can give a surface injection at:

  • The base of their shoulders
  • Loosely put it under their skin
  • Not intermuscular
  • Under their wing into their armpit skin

**** These are not as effective as intermuscular injections but are good alternatives if necessary.

Conclusion: Administering an intramuscular injection in poultry may seem daunting but it is easy to do yourself. By following these simple steps, you can handle sick chickens or infections without worry.
