Introduction to Case Bound Notebook Binding

Overview of the Series

  • This series focuses on creating a case bound notebook from scratch, aimed at total beginners.
  • The presenter is a cleaner from AC Bindings in South Africa and will guide viewers through the entire binding process using minimal equipment.

Understanding Case Binding

  • Historically, books were bound with cover boards and book blocks worked together, often stitched onto bands or cords.
  • In the early 19th century, mechanization led to separate production of book blocks and covers, which were later combined.
  • Modern case bound books are primarily made with cloth covers and account for most commercially bound hardcover books today.

Importance of Learning Case Binding

  • Mastering case binding provides foundational knowledge about book structure and prepares individuals for repairs or rebinding projects.
  • It is also suitable for hand binding; once basic processes are learned, individuals can create their own books effectively.
  • Skills gained from this method can be beneficial for those interested in traditional bookbinding techniques in the future.

Video description

This is the first video in a nine-part series in which I provide a step-by-step outline of how to bind a case-bound book. Case binding is the most widely-used form of contemporary bookbinding and is a good starting point for anyone who wants to learn how to bind or repair books. These videos are intended for total beginners and also use the most basic of equipment, as I am aware that not everyone has access to formal bookbinding tuition and/or expensive equipment.
