How Do Laser Printers Work?
Principles of Operation
- Laser printers operate based on a principle borrowed from copying technology, utilizing a laser beam that turns on and off continuously. This beam is directed via a mirror onto a rotating drum.
- When the laser hits the drum, it alters the electrostatic polarity of its surface. The toner used for printing, which is stored in a separate cartridge, is also electrostatically charged but with an opposite polarity to that of the areas affected by the laser.
- As the drum rotates past a corona wire, it regains its original polarity. For effective toner transfer to paper, the paper must also be electrostatically charged—this charge is stronger and matches the polarity of the areas impacted by the laser on the drum.
